Eastern War Time

Mooney Certificate

Corporal Mooney’s papers and patches were kept in Grandmother’s scrapbook, but his photographs were no longer in their placeholders. In 1944, he and Grandmother spent time together in New York City, Ohio, and Ocean City, NJ.

Reading “Eastern War Time” on the bus schedule below was the first moment during this digital memory project when I found myself stopping to think about how little I truly understand about life at the time. Here I am, going on a mental journey with Grandmother as we visit with our friends in uniform, and then I look down at my bus schedule to read “Eastern War Time” and visions of school emergency drills (“Hide under your desk!”) flash before my eyes.

I feel like Christopher Reeve on Mackinac Island and I just pulled an anachronistic penny out of my pocket.
